Can Marin Cilic win a consecutive shock US Open title?

Marin Cilic has once again reached the latter stages of the US Open. Despite lifting the title last year, it would strangely still be a significant shock for him to repeat the achievement twelve months on. Novak Djokovic is the next hurdle for the Croatian.

Without a title in 2015, Cilic has in now way kicked on from his success in New York last year. As with a number of breakthrough winners in the last decade, the floodgates of major titles has not opened. No player outside of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have more than two titles in the last ten years.

Like last year Cilic has battled through the draw. This is around the time when everything clicked into gear as he blasted my some of the top players in men’s tennis. He will need to do the same again this year, although with added belief, it is impossible to rule him out.

His quarter final epic against Jo Wilfried Tsonga might have taken a lot out of the tank, but of the two, you feel Cilic is more adept at troubling Djokovic in the semi finals. The Serb has been solid if unspectacular so far, dropping odd sets in a manner unlike the Serb of recent years.

– Marin Cilic has truly remarkable US Open record –

We have spoken before about Cilic’s ridiculously strong record at Flushing Meadows. It is by far and away his most consistent event and with this year’s run, he posts a better career win percentage at the US Open than Andy Murray, who fell in the fourth round this year.

A small storyline to their semi final match is that Cilic will have a better win percentage than Djokovic in New York if he wins through to the final. It is these kind of statistics that go a long way to displaying the love affair the ninth seed has with this court.

Even if he were to lose in the semi final, he maintains his record of only having lost to Djokovic, Murray, Federer, del Potro and Nishikori at the US Open. In fact, he has also beaten Murray, Federer and Nishikori in straight sets at the US Open too.

Clearly he feels comfortable in the surroundings and especially on Arthur Ashe where he seems to consistently produce some amazing. He can be sure of centre court billing for the remainder of his journey this year, with another Grand Slam title within grasp.
