Nick Kyrgios: tennis star should see sports psychologist

Nick Kyrgios is a rising star in the sport of tennis. He will never be mentioned among the likes of a John McEnroe if he does not rein in his behavior on and off the court.

Nick Kyrgios is fun to watch. His antics spice up the sport of tennis. But, he must establish himself as a consistent and great player before he acts out on and off the court. Kyrgios was suspended for 8 weeks and fined $25,000 for his lack of effort in a match at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. He lost the match 6-3 6-1.

The 21-year-old Australian does not even have to be winning a match to make it interesting. His suspension can be cut short if he agrees to see a sports psychologist. Now is the time to do that. Instead, the young tennis player is talking about taking time off next season. Kyrgios came out this week announcing he would be skipping a tournament in February 2017 in order to attend the NBA All-Star Game.

Other tennis stars have participated in the NBA All-Star Weekend before, but none have had this level of controversy surrounding them. His bizarre behavior has even caught the attention of world number 2 Andy Murray.

Murray recently commented that the sport should care more about the mental well-being of young athletes thrust into the spotlight.

At 29-years-old, the Scottish tennis superstar is chasing his first ever world number 1 ranking. He, more than anyone, knows the mental and physical pressure that comes with being on tour. His comments were more empathetic to Nick Kyrgios’ situation than most others in tennis right now.

Kyrgios is currently ranked number 14 in the world. His volatile 2016 season still consisted of 3 titles and a 39-15 record. Prize winnings for Kyrgios on the year totaled $1,757,289.

2017 is a critical year for the growing Australian star. Surrounding himself with the right people, focusing on his physical and mental health, and seeking the help of professionals could easily push Kyrgios into the world’s top 10. Tennis is due for a young star to challenge the likes of Murray and Novak Djokovic.
