Gilles Muller advances past 23-year-old Mathias Bourgue at ATP Sofia Open. He is searching for his second title in 2017.

Gilles Muller defeated Bourgue 6-3, 6-2 at the Sofia Open on Tuesday.

Bourgue won a qualifying match to face the world No. 29 in the first round match. His play, however, could not compare to that of Muller who is playing some of the best tennis of his career to start his 2017 ATP World Tour.

Muller kicked off his 2017 campaign with his first career ATP singles title.

With a 197-178 overall career singles record, the Luxembourgish professional tennis player has seen flashes of top tier success. In 2008, Muller made the quarterfinals at the US Open. He is on the verge of again reaching his highest overall singles ranking of No. 28.

Last month, Muller beat Daniel Evans 7-6 (5), 6-2 at the Apia International Sydney. The title at Sydney was his first ever on tour.

At 33-years-old, the Luxembourgish professional tennis player can still hang with anyone in the sport. He is not a player to be taken lightly. His vast experience at both Grand Slams and other tournaments make him a strong contender in any match. Muller is a player to watch this week at the Sofia Open.

He advances at the Garanti Koza Sofia Open to face Mikhail Youzhny who is the current world No. 89. Youzhny has had an extensive career himself, having reached the world No. 8 position in 2008. He has also reached the semifinals at the US Open twice in his career.

While Gilles Muller is the favorite against Youzhny, he must continue to play consistent tennis if he hopes to advance deeper at the Sofia Open.
