Day 3 of the US Open delivered upsets, comebacks, and a dash of Wozniacki magic. From Stricker’s shocker to Djokovic’s dominance and the Tiafoe-Fritz tag team, it’s a tennis frenzy like never before!
Day 3 at the US Open was a rollercoaster ride that left even the pigeons at the stadium trying to keep up! Comebacks, stunning play, walkovers…it all happened on Wednesday.
Dominick Stricker rocked the court by taking down the No. 7 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. Novak Djokovic cruised into the third round faster than you can say “ace.” And let’s not forget, tennis royalty Caroline Wozniacki made a dazzling return, ready to sprinkle her magic all over the court like confetti.
Tommy Terrific: Paul rallies into the third round at the US Open
Tommy Paul was in a sticky spot after an hour and seven minutes. He trailed Roman Safiullin, ranked 60th, 6-3, 6-2.
However, with the determination of someone challenged to a dance-off, he clawed his way back, winning the following three sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-3. Paul faced two break points while serving for the match. Yet he was cooler than a cucumber, swatting them away like pesky flies at a picnic.
Tommy Paul’s victory was a testament to his grit and determination. This guy embodies American tennis on the ATP Tour with a career-high ranking of No. 13. His season kick-started with a semifinal run at the Australian Open. He beat Carlos Alcaraz at an important tournament as well. Now, he’s set his sights on making more magic happen at this hard-court Slam.

Dominic Stricker makes his mark at the US Open
Switzerland sensation Dominic Stricker pulled off a “Top 10 takedown” leaving World No. 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas shaking his racquet in disbelief. In a match that had more twists than a pretzel, Stricker claimed victory 7-5, 6-7(2), 6-7(5), 7-6(6), 6-3.
The 21-year-old qualifier, who’s experiencing the Big Apple for the first time, brought the heat and Swiss precision to the court during this four-hour, 10-minute marathon. Despite the humidity making everyone feel like they were in a sauna, Stricker powered through from 3-5 down in the fourth set.
Stricker summoned his inner magic in the final set, winning 83% of his first-serve points. He also finished the match with 78 winners. It’s like he found the cheat code to tennis domination. Stricker meets Benjamin Bonzi in the third round.

Speaking of Bonzi, the French wildcard crashed the American party, and No 28 ranked Christopher Eubanks’ dreams. Eubanks started strong, then got as sick as someone who ate too many French pastries. Bonzi seized the chance and won 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(7).
Eubanks fought like a trooper despite looking like he’d be wrapped in a blanket instead. Bonzi took the first set, but Eubanks notched the second. Yet in the third, Bonzi came back strong, while Eubanks made more unforced errors than someone faking French.
Eubanks battled back, forced a tiebreak, and almost pulled off a comeback. However, Bonzi had match points up his sleeve, and with a final “touché” he claimed victory.

Novak Djokovic still dominates
Novak Djokovic had a smooth sailin’ day at the US Open. He raced through his second-round match against No 76 ranked Bernabe Zapata Miralles, dropping only six games like they were hot potatoes. The Serbian maestro is on a mission to collect Grand Slam titles like they’re trading cards, eyeing that 24th title with a grin. In this latest episode of Djokovic’s tennis domination, he took down Zapata Miralles 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.
Initially, Djokovic had a little hiccup, saving two break points in his opening service game. Then, he smoothly dialed into the game and coasted from there. He was in control, and there was no holding him back. In the second set, he went turbo mode, winning five straight games, leaving Zapata Miralles wondering if he had wandered into a Djokovic training session.
Oh, and set three? It was basically déjà vu. Both players held serve initially, but then Djokovic hit the afterburners, claiming five unanswered. Zapata Miralles tried to fight, earning a few break points, but it didn’t matter. Djokovic was in the zone, and his tennis vortex was not escaping.
Djokovic moves forward with the swagger of a rockstar, set to face fellow Serbian Laslo Djere in the third round.
Laslo’s been making some waves! He took down American Brandon Nakashima 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 before defeating Hugo Gaston 6-1, 6-2, 6-3. That said, the US Open stage is Novak’s playground, and he’s painting it with victory strokes. He’s like the Energizer Bunny in his quest for US Open glory. He keeps going until it’s Game set, Djokovic!

Wozniacki gets a breakthrough at the US Open
Guess who made a triumphant return to the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium? None other than Caroline Wozniacki, a two-time US Open finalist. This time, though, she scored the best win of her comeback story, taking down the 11th seed Petra Kvitova with a jaw-dropping 7-5, 7-6(5) victory.
Fresh from retirement, Wozniacki strutted her stuff in her third tournament back. She turned into a baseline magician, frustrating Kvitova. The Czech tried to overpower Wozniacki, but she wasn’t having it, especially when it was crunch time in both sets.
Steady as a rock, Wozniacki didn’t let the pressure get to her. She smashed 22 winners, with only 12 unforced errors. On the other side, Kvitova was painting the stat sheet with her risk-taking game, firing an impressive 38 winners. However, those 40 unforced errors were like sprinkles on a cake, a bit much.
Kvitova had her moments in rallies, thinking she was the queen of the court. Yet Wozniacki was the grit master, grinding away and ensuring the ball wouldn’t quit. She had those groundstrokes on lockdown, creating a pressure cooker for Kvitova, who must’ve felt like a fish out of water in that second-set tiebreak.
And just when you thought it couldn’t get more nail-biting, Kvitova pulled out her superhero cape, fighting off not one but two match points when she served at 4-5 in the second set. Then, like a rollercoaster with an unexpected twist, she did it again at 4-6 in the tiebreak. From there, Wozniacki swooped in, served like a pro, and nailed that first match point. No slip-ups, no drama.

American tennis is alive at the US Open!
Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz didn’t just play tennis; they put on a show at the US Open second round. They were on a mission to keep those games under lock and key.
First up, the 10th seed Tiafoe. He was the ultimate fortress from the baseline, dismantling Austrian Sebastian Ofner with a 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 masterpiece. This guy committed only 14 unforced errors in a one-hour, 31-minute showdown. He had a smoother serve than butter, giving up five points behind his first serve and squashing the only break point Ofner dared to present.
The Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd roared as Tiafoe conjured easy firepower from his forehand, sending shots whizzing by Ofner like they were on a mission. Breaking Ofner’s serve five times was just the cherry on top of his performance, and those 21 winners? Well, they were like sprinkles on a sundae.
As for Fritz, he breezed past Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas with a 6-1, 6-1, and 6-2 victory, leaving everyone in awe. His first serve was like a magic potion, winning 36 out of 44 points behind it. Conversely, Fritz was like a defensive ninja, tackling rallies when needed. He hasn’t let anyone break his stride, thwarting three break points, and remains unbroken the entire week.
Fritz has made it easy, only dropping 10 games in his first two matches. His next mission? Taking on the 17-year-old qualifier Jakub Mensik, who defeated Frenchman Titouan Droguet 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(1), 6-3.
