Juan Martin del Potro eyes Brisbane return for 2015 after another length injury lay-off

Exciting news for tennis fans has emerged from Argentine star Juan Martin del Petro as he has announced his intention to return to action at the Brisbane International in January 2015. He has been out since the end of February with a left wrist injury and his comeback in Australia has been long-awaited for his many fans.

with a big serve and booming forehand, he looked to have the weapons to survive and thrive amongst the world’s elite – Del Potro in 2009

Del Potro joins a strong field in Brisbane, with Roger Federer and Kei Nishikori the two stand-out names in the draw. Milos Raonic, Marin Cilic and Grigor Dimitrov also look set to play their first competitive tennis in Brisbane ahead of the first grand slam of the year in Melbourne.

The career of Juan Martin del Potro has consistently threatened to explode into life, particularly after his first and only Grand Slam title victory at the US Open in 2009. With a big serve and booming forehand, he looked to have the weapons to survive and thrive amongst the world’s elite.  At 6 foot 6, it was the movement of del Potro that raised questions early in this career, but he moves well for such a tall player.

However, his career has stuttered with a series of long-term injuries preventing him from making a real impression on the Big Four, when you would imagine he would be the most capable player of breaking the stranglehold of the top guys. His career high ranking of World Number 4 displays his capability of breaking into the upper echelons of the game, but after missing the majority of the year he sits down at 140.

His first Grand Slam action since bowing out at the second round of the Australian Open last year will be in Melbourne again, a tournament where he has struggled to find his best tennis. Two quarter final showings are his best runs so far, losing to Roberto Bautista-Agut last year in five sets.

In terms of rankings points it is crucial that del Potro has a reasonable start to the year as beyond February he has no points behind him. Whilst he can rely on wild cards due to his strong reputation, his seeding will suffer when it comes to the draw. It is likely that he will be unseeded for the Australian Open, arguably making him the most dangerous floater in the draw.
