WTA Tennis Power Rankings: Jan. 12

Outside of the top tier, many highly ranked women lost earlier than expected this past week. Couple that with Serena’s jet-lag/espresso troubles and we have a bit of a shakeup in this week’s WTA Tennis Power Rankings. Without succumbing to a knee-jerk reaction after only a week of play, certain players positioned themselves for a much stronger start to 2015 than others.

(Note: Power Rankings are different than the WTA Rankings. WTA Rankings reflect a players performance over the past 52 weeks while the Power Rankings combine the player’s performance and potential at a given moment during the season.)

Petkovic first round loss is a little less shameful as it came to journey-woman Kaia Kanepi. Petkovic is unseeded in Sydney, but has a favorable draw to perform better than her opening act of 2015.
