AO Quarterfinals: Ranking the Final Eight

Sep 1, 2014; New York, NY, USA; Milos Raonic (CAN) serves to Kei Nishikori (JPN) on day eight of the 2014 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Mandatory Credit: Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

5. Milos Raonic

How he got here:

R1: Illya Marchenko in three

R2: Donald Young in three

R3: Bejamin Becker in three

R4: (12) Feliciano Lopez in five

Possible path to title:

QF: (1) Novak Djokovic

SF: (4) Stan Wawrinka/(5) Kei Nishikori

F: (3) Rafael Nadal

Chance at Championship:

Raonic was cruising along against lesser competition until he met Feliciano Lopez in the Round of 16. That victory against the big hitting lefty was more impressive that any of his straight setters that got him there. Raonic’s serve is a scary prospect for any player on the tour. Still, he is not as intimidating to the great returners. While he will always get his share of aces and easy points on his serve, the best players know that the only need to break him once to take the set. His return game is so weak that an average server can take advantage. The top players he has left to face are some of the best returners in the game and they have good serve games to back it up.
