AO Quarterfinals: Ranking the Final Eight

Jun 6, 2014; Paris, France; Rafael Nadal (ESP) in action during his match against Andy Murray (GBR) on day 13 at the 2014 French Open at Roland Garros. Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

4. Rafael Nadal

How he got here:

R1: Mikhail Youzhny in three

R2: Tim Smyczek in five

R3: Dudi Sela in three

R4: (14) Kevin Anderson in three

Possible path to title:

QF: (7) Tomas Berdych

SF: (3) Andy Murray

F: (1) Novak Djokovic

Chance at Championship:

Nadal has repeatedly stated that he doesn’t consider himself a contender at this year’s Aussie Open because of all the time off he has taken due to injury. After grinding out a victory in Round Two, he sure has looked match ready in dismantling Sela and Anderson. While he has respect for Berdych, he has also owned him lately. The real test will be when he faces his counterparts in the Big Four. While Nadal has looked good, he doesn’t seem physically ready for the type of match it takes when he faces off with the Murray’s and Djokovic’s of the world.
