Andy Murray has produced a stunning smash return in his opening match in the ATP Dubai 500 event that must go down as one of the best reflex shots of his career. Early on in the first set Murray shocked his opponent Gilles Muller by returning his smash onto the line.
It was in keeping with a focussed opening round performance from Murray who looked determined to avoid an upset after a disappointing loss to Gilles Simon in Rotterdam a couple of weeks ago, which was his last competitive outing. He will be acutely aware that his place in the top four is not secure for the upcoming Masters events just yet.
Murray, currently the world number 3 having risen above Rafael Nadal in the most recent rankings update, is no stranger to the spectacular shots and this one had the Dubai crowd on their feet. Returning a smash is difficult enough, but redirecting it for a clean winner is truly remarkable:
Murray’s shot brings back memories of a shot from Roger Federer that he hit against Andy Roddick, a shot that the Swiss maestro considers one of the best of his glittering career.
Not only did Federer get his racket on a strong Roddick smash, he managed to whip his racket round the ball and hit a smash himself, curling round Roddick at the net for a once in a lifetime winner. Roddick’s reaction said it all, rounding the net to congratulate Federer.
