Davis Cup: World Group Quarter Final Draw, GB face France

Great Britain are to play France in the quarter finals on the 2015 Davis Cup, after both sides won their first round ties 3-2 at the start of March. With a favourable draw in front on the winners, both sides will be harbouring ambitions of going all the way this year.

Bedene becoming a British citizen is likely to cause a stir

The doubles rubber is looking as important as ever in deciding the direction of the tie, as Andy Murray would be expected to pick up two singles wins and whichever singles players France opt for should earn two wins against the British number 2, whether it is James Ward or someone else.

It seems likely that Great Britain, the home side for the tie, will opt for a grass court to put the odds in their favour as much as possible. Whilst the Wimbledon courts won’t be in the best condition after two weeks of play, the Queen’s Club courts seem like a good option.

Great Britain

The news of world number 83 Alijaz Bedene becoming a British citizen is likely to cause a stir amongst the Great Britain Davis Cup team that has shown great togetherness and stability in recent years. If his appeal gets through in time, he will pose a selection dilemma.

Another big question will lie in what doubles specialists Great Britain opt for. Whilst Andy Murray was not risked in the doubles rubber against United States, you can be sure that he will play all three rubbers against France, assuming he is not too tired after Wimbledon.

France

France will pin their hopes on beating the second British singles player in both rubbers and winning the doubles to squeeze past the British team. Benneateau and Mahut teamed up in the first round tie against Germany to seal victory, but they will likely be under more pressure in this quarter final.

It is not impossible for one of the French singles players, many of whom have started 2015 strongly, to upset Andy Murray. Gilles Simon has already achieved it this season and Jo Wilfried Tsonga has done it in the past. Gael Monfils has also shown before that he can be the man for the big occasion.

We will learn of the team news as we approach the tie, which is set to take place from the 17th to 19th July, just after Wimbledon. The winner of the match will face either Australia or Kazakhstan in the semi finals.
