ATP Race Rankings: 15th April, Sock on the rise

It has been a quiet couple of weeks in the ATP Race rankings, as two simultaneous 250 events allowed players to pick up points. The beginning of the clay court season signals the start of an important stretch of the season that sees the Race standings continue to take shape.

As the tour ventures around the clay courts of Europe there are plenty of points on offer at the very highest level, with a Grand Slam in the form of the French Open, as well as three Masters 1000 events opening with the Monte Carlo Masters this week.

For a full run through of how the Race rankings are calculated and how they differ from the official ATP rankings, see here.

None of the top ten members of the Race were in action at either the Houston Open or the Casablanca Open last week, which has kept the standings in tact after the American hard court Masters events that effected significant change on the standings.

With Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori not in action this week in Monte Carlo, there is a chance for other members of the Top 10 to close the points gap that has developed, especially between Murray at number 2 and the rest of the field.

Federer and Nadal will both be looking to improve their Race position, which currently reflects an indifferent season for both men so far. Despite taking the title in Dubai, Federer still finds himself somewhat surprisingly down in sixth position.

Feliciano Lopez was unable to make the most of being the top seed at the Houston Open, falling to Sam Querrey in the third round. Kevin Anderson on the other hand continued his consistent start to 2015 with a semi final showing that has helped up up to 11th in the Race.

The top seed at the Casablanca Open also struggled, with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez losing in the second round to a local wild card selection, which prevented him from continue his strong start to the season. The Spaniard remains at 17th in the Race and will hope the rest of the clay court season can see better performances.

It proved to be a productive week for American tennis when it comes to the Race standings, with Sock beating Querrey in the Houston final, a result that helped both men rise the standings. Sock finds himself at 38th in the Race as he seems to be matching his current ranking of 36 in the world.

Hopefully for Sock his maiden singles title and his doubles form, coupled with him seemingly new found motivation can lead to even greater things for the young American. Many people in the tennis community are growing more excited about what the 22 year old could achieve.

Martin Klizan’s win in Casablanca helped him up to 22nd in the Race standings, although failure to continue this form has seen him drop two places to 24th already this week, having lost in the opening round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

It shows the importance of going deep in the bigger events where more points are on the table, as whilst winning a 250 event can be lucrative, performances at the Masters and Grand Slams are what enable players to bridge the gap into the Top 20 and higher.
