Upset Number 4

Third Round

Milos Raonic [7] v Nick Kyrgios [26]

Wherever Nick Kyrgios ended up in the draw, he was expected to create waves. This is what he did in the third round against Milos Raonic, who had been a semi finalist at Wimbledon in 2014. It was a match dominated by huge serving as expected, although only one set went all the way to a tie break.

In a repeat of last years quarter final, Kyrgios looked more focussed then ever in making amends for his loss to the Canadian a year ago. The first set seemed crucial to win for both, with Raonic stealing it away from the Australian with a late break of serve.

Instead of distracting Kyrgios, this setback seemed to galvanise him. He was showing more of his personality on the court, not only between points, but with some breathtaking shotmaking. Again the set was a long one, but this time Kyrgios wrestled a crucial break to cement the swing in momentum.

As so often is the case, a player full on confidence with the shot making ability of Kyrgios can be almost unstoppable. Raonic was fully locked into the match, as both men were holding serves as they had been expected to. The third set tie break was pivotal and perhaps where Kyrgios played his best tennis.

The passion he showed after putting the set to bed was fantastic to see and it seemed to break the spirit of his opponent. It was the Canadian who seemed to give up the ghost, seemingly struggling from an injury, but take nothing away from Kyrgios, who was playing with controlled aggression and admirable concentration.
