Upset Number 2

Second Round

Vasek Pospisil v Fabio Fognini [30]

Vasek Pospisil’s run to the Wimbledon quarter final was filled with upsets as the Canadian tore the draw. Having fought through a five set match in  his opening round, the odds were on an exit in his match against 30th seed Fabio Fognini.

He wasn’t ready for his journey to end so early and produced a stunning serving display that frustrated Fognini. We have seen down the years the benefit of getting under the Italian’s skin and Pospisil’s consistency did just that. A small revival from Fognini was not enough to hurt the Canadian.

Fourth Round

Vasek Pospisil v Victor Troicki [22]

If Pospisil’s victory over Fognini was a surprise, his win over 22nd seed Victor Troicki two rounds later was a huge shock. The Canadian had endured another five set match in the third round, whilst also defending his men’s doubles title with Jack Sock.

Having spent a huge amount of time on the match court over the course of the first week, Pospisil would have been forgiven for giving up the ghost when he went two sets down to the Serbian. Troicki carried the best form of his career into Wimbledon and looked set for a quarter final berth.

Once again Pospisil refused to go down without a fight. Continually reading his notebook that he brought with him onto the court, he focused on holding serve. The ease with which he was doing so enabled him freedom on the return, breaking Troicki a number of times on the way to the biggest singles win of his career.

Score: 6-4 7-6(4) 4-6 4-6 3-6
