Davis defeats Botto in straight sets at Pan-Am Games
Lauren Davis made a clean break in the second set to pick up her first win at the Pan-Am Games Monday. The 21 year old defeated Bianca Botto of Peru 6-3, 6-1 in Round Two to advance to the quarterfinals of the women’s singles event at the Canadian Tennis Centre.
The American had control of the first set taking a 2-0 lead over Botto with an ace to end her opening serve in the match. After winning her third straight against the Peruvian, the winning streak came to an end as Botto responded well against the serve of Davis to get on the board. She rallied back to level up with Davis as her game started to come together while the American suffered a couple of double faults. Botto pulled off Game Six with a triple break point against Davis that now had her threatening to take the lead away.
Davis didn’t let that happen as she held the break over the Peruvian to gain back control. She took a 5-3 lead holding serve by a two-point margin that had her playing for the set. Davis found herself in a whole down two breaks in the ninth game but fought back to put an end to the set. She successfully forced deuce and won the point taking a 1-0 lead in the match. It took 35 minutes to complete with the American having better luck on her second serve where she landed 8 of 12 with seven winners.

Davis kept a three game winning streak going into the second adding another pair of victories as she seemed to have a lock on the match. She was three games from the match taking a win from Botto on a double break point. The Peruvian made her second chance on serve in the set count as she pulled off a love service against the American ending her six game winning streak.
Davis had a fight on her hands in the fifth game as she couldn’t hold the love service against Botto but picked up the win to inch closer to the match. While on the ropes going in the seventh, Botto blasted ahead to a 40-0 score until the wheels started coming off. Davis rallied all the way back to force deuce and putting the Peruvian on check.
Botto fired back on the break but with the serve out of her hands the match was all Davis’s to win. The American fired on the second match point to capture the win in 1 hour and 5 minutes in quite a good finish to start the tennis event. Davis had a better first serve landing 61 percent of her shots while winning 14 of 17. With her return having improved as well the American coasted to her assured victory.
Davis will look forward into Tuesday as she takes on Veronica Cepede of Paraguay who has won two straight matches in straight sets.
