ATP Race Rankings: 13th July, Impact of Wimbledon

Now that the dust has settled from Wimbledon, the impact on the ATP Race can be fully assessed. As with all the Grand Slams, the high tariff of points available has led to some significant shifts in the standings, including a new entry into the Top 10.

With three of the four majors having been played out in 2015, the current lay of the land won’t be changing too dramatically by the end of November and the year end rankings. Attention will be moving towards earning a Top 8 finish and hence qualifying for the prestigious ATP World Tour Finals in London.

For a full run through of how the Race rankings are calculated and how they differ from the official ATP rankings, see here.

Novak Djokovic has already built what looks to be an unassailable lead at the top of the standings. Only Andy Murray, who himself is having a fantastic year, has a outside chance of challenging for the year end number one spot.

It was a successful fortnight for Roger Federer, who despite falling short in the final, we look kindly on the 1,200 points that should keep him at the top of the ATP rankings for another year at least. The top four have extended quite a gap over the rest of the field, although unlike over the last decade, the members to not mirror the Big Four.

Instead, Rafael Nadal remains off the pace in 8th position, making no ground after going out early at Wimbledon. The second half of 2015 will be crucial for his hopes of improving his ranking, although the situation isn’t as dire as it seems. A few good Masters performances and a run in New York will return him to the Top 5.

Richard Gasquet is the only new entrant to the Top 10, benefitting from a tremendous run to the semi finals in London. Despite being 1,000 points off of the Top 8, the Frenchman will look to finish the year with the momentum he has picked up and achieve a career high ranking.

None of the remaining members of the Top 20 threw off the shackles over the Wimbledon final, with only Gilles Simon making the quarter finals. The Frenchman has been inside the Top 10 for portions of his career and will be eyeing the place of his counterpart Richard Gasquet come the end of the year.

There certainly looks to be a place in the Top 10 for an unlikely contender this year, with the likes of Grigor Dimitrov falling off the pace and Marin Cilic even further behind. It will be fascinating to see which player hits a golden patch and makes a move up the race standings in the Autumn.

Viktor Troicki could well be a contender if he can bounce back from his poor loss to Vasek Pospisil in the fourth round of Wimbledon. Whilst he spurned this glorious chance for quarter final points, he has been playing the tennis of his life and has a chance of the Top 10.
