Top Women’s Storylines to Follow Heading Into the US Open Series

With the European clay court season wrapping up and Wimbledon well and truly over, we now look forward to the final leg of the 2015 tennis season. The commences with the US hard court season, which culminates in the US Open. The schedule for the next few weeks is as follows:

Week of August 3:
Bank of the West Classic in Stanford (Defending Champion: Serena)
Citi Open in Washington (Defending Champion: Kuznetsova)

Week of August 10:
Rogers Cup in Toronto (Defending Champion: Aga Radwanska)

Week of August 17:
Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati (Defending Champion: Serena)

Week of August 24:
New Haven Open at Yale in Connecticut (Defending Champion: Kvitova)

Weeks of August 31 and September 7:
US Open in New York (Defending Champion: Serena)

And with the last of this year’s grand slams fast approaching, a tapestry of storylines promise to keep tennis fans alike intrigued until the last point of the US Open is won. Here are some of the storylines to watch out for throughout the next few weeks.

Just a few thoughts that didn’t warrant individual slides:

  • Much has been, and will be written of Serena Williams’ attempt to claim the calendar Grand Slam, so to add to the literature here would be redundant. Granted, her recent injury does provide an interesting hurdle on her path to glory, but that’s a matter for another time.
  • How is Angelique Kerber ranked no. 13, behind such women as Ekaterina Makarova? Granted, her results in the beginning of the year weren’t great, but she sure is playing like a top ten player at the moment.
  • I was tempted to dedicate a slide to Eugenie Bouchard’s slump but it’s still not clear whether she’ll be fit to play in the next month or so.
  • Can Carla Suarez Navarro actually play well at a slam this year? We’ll find out in New York.
  • Will Sharapova’s recent personal issues affect her performance in the US? Having seen Sharapova’s grit and determination on display for many years, I highly doubt it.
  • Can Karolina Pliskova just enter the top ten already!
  • Shoutout to Peng Shuai who really impressed last year in New York, but likely won’t be healthy enough to compete this year. Is a tumble down the rankings certain? Indubitably!
