How will the WTA’s newest Grand Slam finalist fare?

Congratulations if you picked Garbine Muguruza to reach the Wimbledon final last month.
You may have been the only one.
And with the young Spaniard’s debut comes perhaps the most important few months of her career. Muguruza will, and should be proud of making a grand slam final, but with her newly minted top ten ranking and increased popularity comes the expectation of achieving more.
If she maintains her standard of play from the All-England Club, Muguruza could claim a maiden Premier title. But if she allows herself to be overwhelmed by pressure, she could very well enter New York underdone.
And although no one will expect Muguruza to win the US Open, more than a few eyebrows will be raised if she can only manage to match her first round loss in New York last year.
The youngster has pulled out of Stanford, so we’ll have to wait until Canada and Cincinnati to see how she will fare on her return to the hard courts.
Needless to say, the last young woman to reach a maiden Wimbledon final has since faded dramatically.
For Muguruza’s sake, let’s hope the trend isn’t maintained.
