US Open Men’s Seeds Announced for 2015

More from ATP

The seeds have been announced for the upcoming US Open ahead of the draw which is set for Friday. Whilst some players are keen to down the importance of the draw, it has been clear at recent majors that a generous path does not go amiss.

Roger Federer squeezing past Andy Murray in the Rankings was the big story heading into New York, as he leapfrogged the Brit into second place. Murray has placed a clear objective on being the second seed at the US Open, having been down at 8th this time last year.

US Open 2015 Seeds

1 to 4

  1. Novak Djokovic
  2. Roger Federer
  3. Andy Murray
  4. Kei Nishikori

A place a significant amount of importance on the draw, but more from a mental standpoint than a physical one. I think the task that either Murray or Nishikori faces of potentially having to beat Federer and Djokovic in consecutive matches is mentally draining.

Nishikori, on current form, may well be considered the weak link of these top four seeds. However, he made the final in Flushing Meadows last year and has been performing well in North America. The question of his fitness remains, whereas Federer, Djokovic and Murray all seem in prime condition.

5 to 8

  1. Stan Wawrinka
  2. Tomas Berdych
  3. David Ferrer
  4. Rafael Nadal

Nadal will benefit from making inside the top eight for the seedings. Wawrinka is the name that leaps out as one that many will want to avoid, especially Djokovic given their titanic tussles in major quarter finals in the past. Ferrer and Berdych are tough opponents, but to win these events they are the kind of matches you would hope to win in straight sets.

9 to 16

  1. Marin Cilic
  2. Milos Raonic
  3. Gilles Simon
  4. Richard Gasquet
  5. John Isner
  6. David Goffin
  7. Kevin Anderson
  8. Gael Monfils

2014 Champion Cilic finds himself all the way down at nine with no preferential treatment for past success unlike at Wimbledon. He will fall much lower if he can’t defend his title, but this motivation will make him a difficult fourth round opponent.

Elsewhere there are no huge dangers. On their day big servers Anderson and particularly Isner will be threats. The big American has been in the form of his career in recent weeks and will personally be eyeing a draw where he can go deep.

17 to 24

  1. Grigor Dimitrov
  2. Feliciano Lopez
  3. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
  4. Dominic Thiem
  5. Ivo Karlovic
  6. Viktor Troicki
  7. Roberto Bautista Agut
  8. Bernard Tomic

Arguably this section of seeds has more strength in depth, with the likes of Dimitrov and Lopez in good form of late. Tsonga should never be discounted, especially on hard courts, whilst Karlovic has been a menace to play for most of 2015.

25 to 32

  1. Andreas Seppi
  2. Tommy Robredo
  3. Jeremy Chardy
  4. Jack Sock
  5. Philipp Kohlschreiber
  6. Thomaz Bellucci
  7. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez
  8. Fabio Fognini

Creeping into the seedings can be like gold dust when the draw comes out. Sock has a chance for a nice draw and a somewhat safe passage to the third round. Robredo is a tough opponent, whilst I have a sneaking suspicion that Federer will want to avoid Chardy in the third round.
