ATP World Tour Finals Final: Preview and Prediction

facebooktwitterreddit

What a season it has been. Quite fittingly, the season will end at the ATP World Tour Finals in London with a matchup between the two strongest men’s players this past season: Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Both had two-set victories to advance to the finals.  Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal, 6-3, 6-3, while Federer cruised by Swiss compatriot Stan Wawrinka 7-5, 6-3.

While Federer has had a great season with his six titles and his runner-up finishes at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, there is no question that Djokovic has had one of the best seasons ever.  He has won three major titles, a runner-up at the fourth, as well as ten total titles and six Masters 1000 titles.  A very impressive haul, to be sure.

Prediction: Djokovic over Federer (and Federer’s beard) in three sets.  Yes, I am fully aware that Federer beat him in two sets earlier in the tournament.  Despite that, I can’t help but think that Djokovic will turn this around and play his best tennis of the tournament when it really matters most. He did that against Federer in the final at both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

Both men have had success at the ATP World Tour Finals. Federer has won the tournament six times and been the runner-up  three times, a fact that I think is grossly overlooked by tennis announcers and writers.

Djokovic has won the tournament  four times, including the past three years.  He and Federer were scheduled to meet in the 2014 final, but Federer withdrew.

I’ll be back after the final for a wrap-up of the 2015 season and with a brief preview of 2016.
