I have to put Marin Cilic on here because he has actually won a major, the 2014 U.S. Open in three easy sets over Kei Nishikori.  So far this season, he hasn’t done great.  He lost to Dominic Thiem in the tournament in Brisbane.

But how much do the early tournaments matter going into a major?  That is a tricky question and can be very hard to tell.

Going back to 2015, Cilic had a fairly good season.  He started out by missing this Australian Open, so he will have a good chance to pick up some valuable points and should improve upon his current ranking of 13th in the world.  He advanced to the fourth round at the French Open, the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, and the semis at the U.S. Open, where he was taken out by the eventual champion, Novak Djokovic.

As Cilic showed at the U.S. Open in 2014, he is fully capable of pulling some surprises on all of us.  That is why I give him the seventh-best chance to win this major.  He’s fully capable of surprising us and playing some great tennis.
