Angelique Kerber’s win at the Australian Open has to make the list.  The 28-year old German played an unbelievable match to secure the victory in the final of the Australian Open.  The fact that it was such a big upset puts it up on this list.  Kerber nearly lost early in the tournament, even overcoming a match point in one of her wins.  Her first title at a Grand Slam event came at the expense of one of the best players in the history of the game, Serena Williams, thereby making Kerber’s title that much more impressive.

I touched on Williams in an earlier slide, but this one is about Kerber.  Here is somebody who broke through at the (relatively) late age of 23, going to the semifinals of the U.S. Open in 2011.  She’s always been a very good player but wasn’t ever in a major final before this one in Australia.

She rose to the challenge, beating the best player in the women’s game and playing the match (to date) of her career.

Plus, she’s a very nice and personable lady, which should make everyone that much happier for her.
