With the rainout on Monday at the French Open, I figured I would take a look at something I’ve seen many other sites and people around the internet comment on: the zebra outfits worn by some of the players.

Typically, I stick to what’s happening on the court at the French Open.  I figure it’s mostly what people come here for.  But I’ve seen so much written about the black and white “zebra” Adidas outfits at the French Open that I’m afraid I have to comment on them.

It’s certainly not what you expect to see from a tennis outfit.  Blues, whites, and blacks seem to be the favored colors, although generally in solid patterns, not things like this. But these clothes helped gain status because such star players as Ana Ivanovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are wearing the clothes.

Both Tsonga and Ivanovic liked the clothes, as well.  As Tsonga said in a piece in USA Today, “What is important is that people talk about it.”  Ivanovic also spoke in favor of the zebra pattern saying: “I know opinions are split but I’m for.”

At first I wondered if I was the only one intrigued by this.  Then, I noticed that articles were popping up at sports sites and pages such as at the New York Times, Fox Sports and USA Today, so I decided to write a brief piece about it.

The trend goes beyond the two aforementioned players. Simona Halep incorporates suspenders into the look while Alexander Zverev had them on a headband, as well.

Anyway, I figured I’d comment on this outfit choice at the French Open because I’ve seen other people do it and I wanted to offer my take.  I kind of like the outfits.  They bring some more flair to the clothes which is, I think, a good thing.  Regardless, it’s harmless.  I can’t see getting too worked up about the clothes.
