ATP and WTA Schedules: Rest of Season
Here’s a quick look at the schedule and what falls when in the ATP and WTA tennis schedules for the rest of the season.
This week, there are three ATP tournaments and two WTA tournaments. Connected with the ATP tournament in Newport, Rhode Island are, of course, the Hall of Fame inductions. None, however, are really big tournaments and all the top players are taking sometime off after Wimbledon.
The big stuff comes next, starting at the end of July. After a few more tournaments, the Rogers Cup occurs in Toronto and Montreal where the ATP and WTA, respectively, will hold big tournaments.
Of course, perhaps the biggest thing between now and the U.S. Open is the Olympics in Rio, which will happen from August 6-14. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, for all of their extraordinary accomplishments, have both yet to win an Olympic gold medal in singles. I’m betting that one of them wins it this time.
Immediately following is typically the biggest U.S. Open prep in Cincinnati. I have a feeling that this year, however, you will see multiple people pull out of the tournament if they can.
After this is the U.S. Open. Novak Djokovic will try to rebound after his tough Wimbledon. I certainly expect that he will. Winning could be tricky if Andy Murray continues to get better, as he has since his rehiring of Ivan Lendl. Milos Raonic has improved, too. And, of course, let’s not completely count out Roger Federer. He was close to making another Grand Slam final.
After the U.S. Open comes the Asian hard court swing in the fall. Typically, this is when the non-hardcore tennis fans tune out somewhat. Occasionally, some fans do resurface for the year-end championships which are located in Singapore for the WTA and in London for the ATP.
This is just a very surface-level look at what is to come in tennis. Come back to Lob and Smash for more information on these tournaments, as well as predictions for what to expect at all of these ATP and WTA tournaments.
