This week, the Dominican professional tennis player becomes the only player in history to win three titles at a single tournament and nowhere else.
The win in Ecuador thrusts the 36-year-old Dominican player back into the top 100. He is now the world No. 93 in men’s singles tennis.
"“I love playing here and I am sure I’ll be back next year. I loved the crowd here and how they welcomed and supported me during the whole week. I am thankful. I’m leaving with an ATP final and that’s very important for me.” – Victor Estrella Burgos"
Estrella Burgos is a fantastic story for the sport of tennis.
His highest ranking to date is No. 43, which he achieved in 2015. It was the same year that he also defeated Marin Cilic in Barcelona to claim his first win over a top 10 men’s singles player. That same tournament, he advanced over the then up and coming Dominic Thiem.
His third straight win at the Ecuador Open might be his most special yet. Estrella Burgos had to get past the top seeded player in the tournament during the round of 16. Ivo Karlović is the world No. 20 in men’s singles tennis. Estrella Burgos dug deep to win a hard fought three set match over Karlovic, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. The win would be the start of another historic run in Quito.
The finals victory came over Paolo Lorenzi of Italy. Lorenzi is the current world No. 37. The tennis world celebrates the unique story of Victor Estrella Burgos and his dominance at the Ecuador Open over the past three years.
