John Isner is advancing deeper into play at the 2017 Memphis Open. The American is searching for his first title at the tournament.

John Isner is one of the top Americans in tennis right now.

He is, however, losing ground to the up and coming Jack Sock. Both Isner and Sock helped team USA advance in the world group at this year’s Davis Cup. Team USA won 5-0 over Switzerland.

Isner won his first match at the Memphis Open.

He defeated 21-year-old Yoshihito Nishioka 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance.

Throughout his career, the American tennis player has been dominant in his own country. Despite his numerous titles at ATP tournaments in the United States, he has yet to win the Memphis Open. This year, he will have to get past top seeded player Ivo Karlovic.

Karlovic is the current world No. 20. Isner is right behind him, coming in at world No. 23. Off to a slow start, the American is just 3-2 on the year thus far.

The towering Isner has 10 ATP titles to his name and reached a career high ranking of No. 9 in 2012. He has shown promise over the years, including deep runs in the first three legs of the Grand Slams last season.

A win at the Memphis Open could put John Isner back in the conversation in men’s singles tennis. There are numerous Americans vying for glory this week. They must all consider both Isner and Karlovic if they hope to advance.
