Harrison defeats Basilashvili 6-1, 6-4.
The young American tennis player did not drop a single set on his path to victory at the 2017 Memphis Open. He also defeated fellow American, Sam Querrey, in the round of 16. Querrey was the No. 3 seeded player at the tournament this week.
"“It’s always special to win a title, and especially your first one. But when you’re winning it like this in front of your family and friends and people who’ve come out and supported you ever since I was playing 10-and-under events… it definitely means a lot to win that in front of everybody like that.” – Ryan Harrison"
Harrison was understandably emotional after his victory. The young American represents a rising generation of players in the U.S. Fellow American John Isner fell short in his quarterfinals match on Friday. Isner’s time on top is slowing giving way to players like Harrison and Jack Sock.
The finals appearance for Basilashvili is also impressive. He is coming off of a semifinals match last week at the Sofia Open. His start to 2017 makes him a player to watch in the coming months.
Ryan Harrison is the current world No. 43 and he hopes to continue rising in the rankings over the next several weeks. The win at the Memphis Open puts him on the right track. The American tennis player also finished second in the doubles finals against Brian Baker and Nikola Mektic.
