Nick Kyrgios rallies at the Open 13 Marseille to advance to a semifinals match. It’s his first competitive singles tournament since Melbourne Park.

Nick Kyrgios is the defending champion at the Open 13 Marseille.

So far, the young Australian tennis player is acting as any defending champion should. He wins his quarterfinals match in straight sets over Norbert Gombos to move closer to glory in Marseille.

More from Lob and Smash

Kyrgios wins 6-3, 6-3 over Gombos.

The 21-year-old Australian tennis player is the world No. 16. Known for his on and off the court antics, Kyrgios has been largely drama-free this week.

With three career singles titles to his name, Kyrgios is looking to add a fourth this week in Marseille. He has no titles thus far on the 2017 ATP World Tour. His last tournament, the Australian Open, did not go as planned. The world No. 16 saw an early exit, losing to veteran singles player Andreas Seppi in the round of 64.

The 2017 Open 13 Marseille is a chance at redemption for Nick Kyrgios.

Also still in action is the top seeded French tennis player, Gael Monfils. The world No. 12 is without a doubt the favorite, playing on his own soil. He is, however, one of many top ranked French players still alive in Marseille. Monfils faces fellow countryman, Richard Gasquet, in a quarterfinals match.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the world No. 11, also advances to the semifinals with Kyrgios. He defeats fellow French player Gilles Simon in the quarterfinals. Both players are former champions at the ATP tournament. No matter who advances in the remaining quarterfinals matches, the field is packed with top men’s singles players. Nick Kyrgios will have to dig deep and remain focused if he hopes to defend his title in Marseille.
