John Isner evens his singles record to 4-4 on the year. He loses to Steve Johnson in his opening round match at the Mexican Open.

John Isner is out early in yet another ATP tournament.

The current world No. 22 drops his opening round match to Steve Johnson in straight sets. His fellow countryman takes the match 6-4, 6-4.

Isner was the No. 8 seeded player in Acapulco.

The loss to Johnson not only evens Isner’s record to 4-4 on the year, but also his and Johnson’s career head-to-head record to 4-4.

Johnson represents a group of American players who are finding success without Isner. Recently, American Jack Sock has also splashed onto the scene. Despite Isner’s wavering play, his fellow countrymen are continuing to do well on tour in 2017.

The loss at the Mexican Open is not what Isner needed. He is yet to advance past the second round of any tournament he has played in thus far. The start to his 2017 ATP World Tour is anything but ideal. Johnson is the same player who knocked Isner out of the tournament in Auckland to start the year.

With Isner out of the mix, other top players in men’s tennis will look to take advantage of the remaining players. World No. 2 Novak Djokovic and other top seeded players are in action this week in Acapulco. The tournament is Djokovic’s first ATP singles event since his own early exit at Melbourne Park. The world No. 2 would do well to advance deep into action at the Mexican Open.

This is the second tournament in a row that Isner has been knocked out by another American tennis player. He will need to recover from the loss in order to hang onto a ranking within the top 25. Stay tuned to see how John Isner bounces back from the early round upset at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.
