Federer wins 6-3 7-6 (7-5).
While the loss shows Federer’s continued dominance over the sport this year, it is not a disappointment for Murray. The world No. 1 has been battling an elbow injury and has yet to reach his peak form in 2017.
After the match, Murray saw enough positive takeaways to mention that Monte Carlo is a possibility.
Even if he is still banged up, the world No. 1 will need to remain poised if he plays in Monte Carlo. The favorite will undoubtedly be Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal. The surging Nadal has nine titles at Monte Carlo and is gearing up for the clay court season.
As for Federer, he does not plan to play any ATP tournaments until the French Open. It appears as though the Big Four are back. They will all need to strategically pick which tournaments they play in leading up to the next Grand Slams. Andy Murray remains the world No. 1 but would serve himself well to have a strong performance at the Monte Carlo Masters.
