Rafael Nadal wins the 2017 Mutua Madrid Open. He defeats Dominic Thiem in the final and earns his third straight ATP singles title.

Rafael Nadal wins his fifth title at the Madrid Open.

The Spanish tennis superstar has now won three straight ATP singles tournaments. Known as “The King of Clay” for his fantastic play this time of year, Nadal is right where he needs to be.

With Roland Garros just weeks away, Nadal is set to make a run for his tenth title at the Grand Slam. His play at Madrid is more proof that he is the player to beat right now.

Nadal defeats Thiem in straight sets, winning 7-6 (10-8) 6-4.

Thiem, the current world No. 7, is playing strong tennis as of late. Nadal had to play his best tennis to win the opening set tie-break. Nadal’s hard fought win now makes his the world No. 4 in men’s singles tennis.

The Spanish tennis player’s week included other big wins over the likes of Novak Djokovic, David Goffin, Nick Kyrgios, and Fabio Fognini. Despite being considered by many as the favorite in Madrid this year, Rafael Nadal faced one of the more difficult seedings at the tournament. Proving himself, Nadal rose to the occasion to taste glory.
