John Isner is in need of a strong ATP singles performance. He may have found that at the Italian Open where he has reached the semifinals.

John Isner is the current world No. 24 in men’s singles tennis.

The American tennis player has struggled so far in 2017. On the year, he is 9-8 in ATP singles matches coming into the Italian Open. Now, however, he reaches the semifinals in Rome.

Isner defeats Marin Cilic in the Italian Open quarterfinals.

Earning his spot in the semis, the American defeats Cilic in three sets. He takes the match 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 7-6 (7-2. It was not easy for Isner, but he comes out on top over the sixth seeded Cilic.

Still to play their quarterfinals matches are two former champions in Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The Spanish tennis star may have the more difficult match of the two as he faces Dominic Thiem. Both Nadal and Djokovic are in action on Friday.

As for John Isner, the Italian Open could be a turning point in 2017.

The 32-year-old American has 10 career ATP singles titles to his name. He reached as high as the world No. 9 position in 2012, but he has seen ups and downs as of late. With the French Open rapidly approaching, Isner might be peaking at just the right time. Last year at Roland Garros, he reached the fourth round of play.
