Camila Giorgi made her racket work and Elina Svitolina wasn’t happy in two regards either. The most predictable isn’t always the one to depend on.
Elina Svitolina, ranked No. 5 in the world, crawled the ranking ladder slowly. This year started off great with aw in over top ranked Angelique Kerber in the Brisbane International quarterfinals.
"“I was really looking forward to this year at Wimbledon. But today the court was slippery and it’s so bad for my foot”, Svitolina said disgustingly about her condition.More from Lob and SmashCaroline Wozniacki gets her wild card for the Australian OpenTennis News: Rafael Nadal, Emma Raducanu and protected rankingsMartina Navratilova: Money lost by coming out was in the ‘millions’Tennis News: Novak Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios and Matteo BerrettiniBoris Becker and Rick Macci bicker over Carlos Alcaraz"
Back in January she was ranked No. 14, but had hopes and dreams of doing big things. She was the only WTA player who had beaten the No. 1 Kerber at Beijing last year along with top ranked Serena Williams at the Rio Games.
Svitolina won back-to-back titles with the Taiwan Open this year over Peng Shuai and the Dubai Duty Free overpowering Caroline Wozniacki. She proved her skills also in winning the BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup, knocking out Elise Mertens.
She was able to prove herself and get more respect from her WTA comrades when she captured the Italian Open title this year over No. 3 ranked Simona Halep.
Roland Garros didn’t treat her fair as she lost to Halep in the quarters at 6-3, 6-7, 0-6 running out of stamina emotionally and physically.

Here at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham she battled with Heather Watson in the first round to finally win in three sets. Italy’s Camila Giorgi met her in the second round and she’d thought it would be not so overpowering that Giorgi was ranked No. 102, with hardly the experience and tennis weapons that she had. But, Svitolina was wrong.
Giorgi had most of the answers, some surprises and deceptive down-the-line shots while others were the routine strategies of crosscourts that Svitolina just wasn’t fast enough to return.
Svitolina lost to her in 3 sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. But, it could have been the opening round with Watson that took a lot of sting out of Svitolina’s game plan. At this time her foot was giving her problems and she wanted to play Wimbledon.
"“I will do my best. But for the moment it’s very uncomfortable, and there is a question, I think…where I will feel more comfortable and confident on hard court”. Svitolina after the match."

There is doubt of Elina Svitolina’s playing ability but it’s all in the condition of her resting and recuperating from her foot ailment.
"If she can, she’ll try Wimbledon and if not, she says “…the season is still long and there is lots of big tournaments as well…”"
