McEnroe knows how to create controversy.

While he initially ranked her No. 700, he then backed off and said she would be around No. 5 among the all-time greats.

Williams is easily the greatest women’s singles tennis player to play the sport. She is also considered among the greatest athletes to ever live. The American tennis superstar has an incredible 39 Grand Slam titles.

In women’s singles, Williams holds 23 Grand Slam titles. She then has an impressive 14 in doubles to go along with another 2 in mixed doubles.

There is no doubt that Serena Williams has the stats and experience to match up against anyone in the sport of tennis.

McEnroe re-ranked his top players, placing Roger Federer at No. 1 and Williams at No. 5. The American tennis star is taking time away from the sport for her pregnancy. While we may never witness her being matched up against a men’s singles player in competitive action, one must always consider Williams a contender in any match she plays.
