Daniil Medvedev upsets Stan Wawrinka on day one at Wimbledon 2017. Wawrinka was the fifth seed in men’s singles at the Grand Slam.
Daniil Medvedev pulls off the biggest upset so far at Wimbledon 2017.
The 21-year-old Russian tennis player defeats fifth seed Stan Wawrinka in the first round. He takes the match in four sets, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Medvedev is the current world No. 49 in men’s singles tennis. He is 16-14 in singles matches in 2017 and remains in search of his first title.
The loss to Wawrinka is major.
Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam singles title that the Swiss tennis star has not won. Previously, he’s reached the quarterfinals twice at the major tournament.
Wawrinka is the current world No. 3 in men’s singles tennis. He has won at least one Grand Slam title in each of the previous three years. Daniil Medvedev remained in control throughout the majority of the match, keeping Wawrinka on the defensive.

World No. 1 Andy Murray cruised through his first round match, winning in straight sets. The other surprise in men’s singles came when Nick Kyrgios retired after two sets due to injury. He was the twentieth seed in men’s singles this week.
