Rafael Nadal was also in action on Monday. The 2017 French Open champion appeared dominant on the court, defeating John Millman in straight sets. Up next for Nadal is American tennis player Donald Young.

Somewhat of a surprise was the retiring of Australian Nick Kyrgios. He failed to complete his match with Pierre-Hugues Herbert. After the second set, Kyrgios cited an injury and retired.

Other top seeded men’s singles winners included Kei Nishikori, Marin Cilic, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to name a few.

On the women’s singles side, second seed Simona Halep claimed a straight set win in her opener. She advances to face Beatriz Haddad Maia on Wednesday.
