Kerber was the top seed at Wimbledon this year. The two-time Grand Slam singles champion was seeking her first ever title at Wimbledon. She will have to wait another year to try again.
Muguruza takes the fourth round meeting in three sets. She wins 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The third and final set went fittingly back and forth until Muguruza pulled away in the final two games. It was clear that Kerber had lost the momentum and Muguruza capitalized. The Spanish-Venezuelan tennis star does have a French Open title to her name.
Currently, Muguruza is the current world No. 15 on the WTA Tour. She will likely rise in the rankings after the end of the week. The fourteenth seed may even walk away with another Grand Slam title if she can keep it up. Angelique Kerber took one set off of Muguruza. It is the only set the fourteenth seed has dropped so far at Wimbledon.
Up next for Muguruza is Svetlana Kuznetsova. The seventh seed took down Aga Radwanska at Wimbledon on Monday. She takes the match 6-2, 6-4 with ease. Also winning her fourth round match is French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. She moves on to face American tennis star Venus Williams in the quarterfinals.
Stay tuned to see how the action in women’s singles unfolds. Play at Wimbledon will determine who will become the next world No. 1 on the WTA Tour.
