At just 23-years-old, Muguruza is breaking onto the scene of women’s singles tennis in dominant fashion. She defeats Venus Williams at 7-5, 6-0 to win the 2017 Wimbledon women’s singles title. The win shows her to be a rising star in the sport.
Williams was the veteran coming into their finals meeting. She could not, however, keep up with the younger Muguruza. Cruising through the second set, the women’s singles champion carried all of the momentum with her.
Throughout her two weeks at Wimbledon, Garbine Muguruza dropped just a single set.
Looking forward to the end of the 2017 WTA Tour, several top rankings are up for grabs. The sport will see a new world No. 1 on Monday. Several players, Muguruza included, will advance higher in the rankings. The shakeup in the comings months will make for a thrilling ending to 2017.
The Wimbledon champion won her first Grand Slam title last year. She defeated Serena Williams at the 2016 French Open. There, Muguruza took the match in straight sets. It appears that she has found her rhythm on the court. Looking ahead to the US Open, she must be a player to watch despite her dominance more on clay and grass as of late. The momentum of the Wimbledon win will propel her in the final months of the year.
Other players to watch on the WTA Tour moving forward include new world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep among others. Halep reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon this week before falling to British tennis player Johanna Konta. She remains in search of her first ever Grand Slam singles title. Stay tuned to see how Garbine Muguruza and others fare throughout the rest of the season.
