Garbine Muguruza cracks WTA top 5, Venus Williams into top 10

Garbine Muguruza rises ten places in the WTA Tour singles rankings. She reaches the world No. 5 position as Venus Williams also cracks the top 10.

Garbine Muguruza rises dramatically in the rankings after her Wimbledon win.

The now world No. 5 moved up ten places in the WTA Tour singles rankings on Monday. She is on the heels of British tennis star Johanna Konta.

Muguruza is inching closer to her highest ever ranking of No. 3. A strong finish to the 2017 WTA Tour could see her reaching new heights in women’s singles. Look for the Wimbledon champion to be a player to beat moving forward.

As for Konta, her semifinals appearance also allows her to crack the top five. She moves into the world No. 4 position, rising three positions after Wimbledon. Her strong performance shows that she might have a Grand Slam in her future.

Wimbledon runner-up, Venus Williams, moves into the WTA top 10 on Monday.

Her fantastic run at the major tournament moves her from the No. 11 ranking to No. 9. Even at 37-yearso-old, Williams is one of the best in women’s singles. She proved that an eighth Grand Slam title is not necessarily out of the question.

With the US Open still to come, look for Williams to be an interesting player to watch. She does have two titles at the major tournament.

World No. 2 Simona Halep remains in her position on Monday. Her quarterfinals loss to Konta was enough to solidify her ranking after Wimbledon. As for the world No. 1 ranking though, the WTA saw some shakeups.

Former No. 1 Angelique Kerber now drops to the No. 3 position. In her place is Karolina Pliskova. The 25-year-old Czech tennis star is surging with three WTA titles in 2017. Despite a second round loss at Wimbledon, Pliskova’s track record this year set her up to take the top ranking in women’s singles tennis.

With the US Open rapidly approaching, all of the top seeds in women’s singles tennis will be at their best moving forward. Garbine Muguruza is just 23-years-old and there is no doubt that the now two-time Grand Slam champion is here to have an impact on the sport.
