Federer took home his eighth Wimbledon title in straight sets. He defeated Cilic, winning the finals meeting 6-3, 6-1, 6-4.
In the second set, Cilic paused while down 0-3 to receive treatment for a blister and re-aggravated injury he suffered during his semifinal with Sam Querrey. It was clear to Cilic that he could not keep up with the nearly perfect play of Federer.
While a win at Wimbledon will have to wait, Marin Cilic is already a former US Open champion.
In 2014, Cilic won his first ever Grand Slam. He defeated Kei Nishikori 6–3, 6–3, 6–3 to win the US Open and join the rankings of top players in men’s singles tennis. Now, he is aiming to prove that he still belongs in those ranks.
