Stan Wawrinka is on a streak worthy of mention among the names of the ‘Big Four’ in men’s singles tennis. Here’s how he matches up against Andy Murray.

Stan Wawrinka has three Grand Slam titles in the last three years.

His shocking early round upset at Wimbledon this year forces him to wait until 2018 for another chance at the only major tournament he is yet to win. He does, however, have just as many overall Grand Slam singles titles as Andy Murray.

The world No. 1, Murray, is hanging on by the skin of his teeth right now. His quarterfinals appearance at Wimbledon gave him just enough points to remain the top player in men’s singles tennis.

With the US Open rapidly approaching, we must remind ourselves that both Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray each have three Grand Slam singles titles.

Murray burst onto the scene with his first Grand Slam win in 2012. He took home the US Open men’s title by defeating Novak Djokovic. Since that win, Murray has earned two titles at Wimbledon.

Wawrinka’s first major tournament win came at the 2014 Australian Open. There, he defeated Rafael Nadal in four sets. The Swiss tennis star would then win the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open. He comes into the US Open this year as the defending champion.

The pressure is on the world No. 1 Murray to outperform Wawrinka at this year’s US Open. If Stan Wawrinka can defend his title, the argument can be made that he, instead of Murray, belongs in the ‘Big Four’. At the very least, mentions of the ‘Big Five’ should be made once Wawrinka earns a fourth career singles Grand Slam.

Stan Wawrinka is the current world No. 5 on the ATP World Tour.

The Swiss tennis star is ranked No. 4 in the Race to London. Murray, on the other hand, is ranked just No. 8 in the year end finals race. Their 2017 singles records are extremely comparable.

Right now, Wawrinka is 26-11 on the year and Murray is 25-10. Each player also has one ATP singles title on the year. The coming weeks will determine a lot in the battle between Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray. With the US Open coming in just over one month, both players will without a doubt be eyeing their fourth career Grand Slam title.
