German Open: Leonardo Mayer completes upset over top seed

German Open action is underway at the German Tennis Championships 2017. Leonardo Mayer notches an upset over the top seeded player.

German Open action is underway in Hamburg. Leonardo Mayer does the unexpected and upsets top seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the round of 32.

After cruising through his qualifying matches, the Argentine completes a tough three-set upset over Ramos-Vinolas. The win for Mayer comes just after second seed Pablo Cuevas also lost on Tuesday at the ATP tournament.

Mayer defeats Ramos-Vinolas in three sets, winning 6-7, 6-3, 7-6. Carrying the second set in fine form and outlasting the No. 1 in the third, Mayer moves on to face Jan-Lennard Struff on Thursday.

Swedish Open champion David Ferrer is in action on Wednesday in Hamburg. The Spanish tennis player could make a deep run at the German Tennis Championships now that the top two seeds have been upset. His win at the Swedish Open was his first ATP World Tour singles title on the year.

David Ferrer has a career total 27 ATP World Tour singles titles to his name.

At 35-years-old, he has the experience necessary to dominate any tournament. He faces Nikoloz Basilashvili on Wednesday after their match was delayed.

The losses to both top seeds in Hamburg make the path toward the finals even more interesting than expected. Third seed Karen Khachanov wins his opening match in straight sets. The 21-year-old Russian tennis player is just 19-19 on the year. He is, however, the world No. 32 in men’s singles on the ATP World Tour. At his young age, Khachanov already has one title and can play spoiler this week in Hamburg. Stay tuned to see how he fares throughout the rest of the German Tennis Championships.

Fourth seed Gilles Simon also wins his opener. Look for the French tennis veteran and others such as Khachanov to now be the favorites at the German Tennis Championships in Hamburg. Tournaments likes these will be crucial, especially for younger players and experienced veterans, leading up to the 2017 US Open. A win could mean major momentum moving forward.
