As the No. 1 seed, Wozniacki must be considered the favorite moving forward. She has made several deep tournaments runs so far this year. The Danish tennis star is poised to win a title. Up next for the former world No. 1 is Elise Mertens of Belgium.

Mertens is the current world No. 55 in women’s singles tennis. Earlier in the week, she upset fifth seeded Carla Suárez Navarro. Mertens can play spoiler this week. Although Wozniacki will be the favorite, the young Belgian tennis player did win a title this year in Istanbul.

Wozniacki and Mertens square off on Saturday at the WTA Swedish Open.

The other semifinals match this week features third seed Caroline Garcia. The French tennis star takes on seventh seed Kateřina Siniaková. While Garcia will be the favorite in their meeting, Siniaková did upset the second seed earlier in the week.

If Caroline Wozniacki can pull of a title win this week, she will be right where she needs to be for the coming weeks. The 2017 US Open is right around the corner. With just weeks to go before the major tournament, any momentum the former world No. 1 can gather is critical. Several top players are in action around the world this week. Simona Halep is set to take the court at the Washington Open. The world No. 2 will look to solidify her top ranking. Players such as Wozniacki and Halep are not only looking to improve their overall rankings, but also their places in the Race to Singapore.

Stay tuned to see how the WTA Swedish Open semifinals unfold.
