Winning in three sets, Leonardo Mayer takes the finals meeting 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

While he has played a somewhat limited schedule on the 2017 ATP World Tour, Mayer brought his best tennis to Hamburg this week.

Coming into the finals meeting, the two players were 1-1 against each other throughout their careers. Now, Leonardo has the edge.

The win at the German Tennis Championships makes Leonardo Mayer one of the few multi-win champions at the tournament. He joins the likes of Roger Federer and Andriy Medvedev in Hamburg.

After his victory, Mayer celebrated on court with his girlfriend and newborn son. The win is big for the 30-year-old tennis veteran. While he is currently the world No. 138 in men’s singles tennis, he has proven that he has what it takes to compete at the highest of levels. He will rise drastically in the singles rankings on Monday.

It’s a disappointing result for German tennis player Florian Mayer. He would have liked to earn the title in front of his home crowd. With a singles record of 5-13 on the year, this past week in Hamburg is a momentum booster for Mayer. The 33-year-old tennis veteran saw an impressive run at the 2017 German Open and should take away many positives from the week. Plenty of ATP World Tour action continues in the coming weeks. The 2017 US Open is right around the corner and players everywhere are looking for momentum going into the Grand Slam. Stay tuned to see how Leonardo Mayer and others fare throughout the rest of the year.
