Dominic Thiem: top seed sets up for strong run at Washington Citi Open

Dominic Thiem comes into the Washington Citi Open as the top seed for the first time in his career. He cruises through his opening round match.

Dominic Thiem is having an impressive year on the 2017 ATP World Tour. To go along with his one title victory, he also has wins over several top ten men’s singles players.

As the current world No. 7 in men’s singles tennis, Thiem enters the Washington Citi Open with the No. 1 seeding. He defeats Henri Laaksonen in his opening round match at the tournament.

Thiem wins his opening round match in straight sets. He defeats Laaksonen with ease, winning 6-3, 6-3. The Swiss Laaksonen had taken down Vasek Pospisil in the round of 64 before meeting the top seed.

Washington Open defending champion, Gael Monfils, is in action of Wednesday at the tournament. He is the No. 5 seed this week. Several top seeds also won their opening round matches on Tuesday.

At just 23-years-old, Dominic Thiem has already established himself as a top player in men’s singles tennis.

American star Jack Sock survives his match against Marius Copil of Romania. He wins in straight sets but was forced to endure the meeting as he takes the match 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6). Sock is the No. 8 seed at the Washington Open this week.

Second seed Kei Nishikori wins his opening match on Tuesday. He defeats American Donald Young in three sets. Nishikori is the current world No. 9 in men’s singles tennis. He is also a former champion at the Washington Open. In 2015, the Japanese tennis star topped John Isner to win the title. His round of 16 meeting will not be a given as he faces No. 13 seed Juan Martín del Potro on Thursday. Del Potro is a three-time champion at the Washington Open.

Dominic Thiem represents the future of the ATP World Tour.

While Thiem is yet to win a Grand Slam, the 23-year-old is poised to make his mark on the sport of tennis. With his 38-16 ATP singles record on the year, he has already seen wins over the likes of Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic among others. His name must be considered when discussing the best in men’s singles tennis.

The Austrian tennis star is eyeing the upcoming US Open. In both 2014 and 2016, he reached the fourth round of the Grand Slam.
