Hyeon Chung, South Korea

Age: 21 (5/19/1996)
ATP World Tour Ranking: No. 56
Race to Milan Ranking: No. 6
2017 W-L Record: 13-9 (3-2 in Grand Slams)

Hyeon Chung is beginning to turn heads around the ATP World Tour. He reached the third round at a Grand Slam event for the first time in 2017, when he defeated veterans Sam Querrey and Denis Istomin at Roland Garros.

Chung lost a 5-7, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, 4-6 thriller to Kei Nishikori in the third round, but his performance at the French Open was riveting.

The French Open was Chung’s biggest performance to date, but his standout showing was at the 2017 Barcelona Open. He won a pair of qualifying matches to enter the field, defeated Istomin in the Round of 64, and upset Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Round of 32.

Chung then stunned Alexander Zverev for the biggest win of his young career, and took Rafael Nadal to a tiebreak in the first of a two-set loss in the quarterfinals.

Chung’s performances on clay should be a sustainable form of success, as his style of play fits the surface well. He has a methodical service game, plays the angles well, and has a backhand that opponents often regret hitting to.

Following wins over Gael Monfils and Alexander Zverev, as well as a strong showing against Rafael Nadal, Hyeon Chung is making his name known on the ATP World Tour.
