Marin Cilic withdraws from Cincinnati Masters after already missing Rogers Cup action. Is his health a concern going into the 2017 US Open?

Marin Cilic has withdrawn from the 2017 Cincinnati Masters. He remains confident, however, that he will be able to play in the US Open.

Last month, the Croatian tennis star struggled in his finals match at Wimbledon. The world No. 6 fell to Swiss superstar Roger Federer in straight sets.

As the 2014 US Open champion, there is no doubt that the entire tennis community wants Cilic in action at the Grand Slam. He will have to prove that he is healthy enough to compete though. Despite the withdrawal from Cincinnati, Cilic told the Associated Press that he is on track to play in the final Grand Slam of the year.

Marin Cilic is suffering from an abductor injury.

The lingering injury to the world No. 6 is just one of many occurrences this year on the ATP World Tour. Top players Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka will both miss the rest of the year due to injury.

World No. 1 Andy Murray has also seen lingering injuries in recent months. He too is a former winner at the US Open. Murray remains the top player in men’s singles but Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal is close to overtaking him.

If Marin Cilic can prepare in time for the 2017 US Open, he will be a favorite for the title. Along with his 2014 win at the Grand Slam, he has seen several deep runs at the major tournament. With defending champion Wawrinka out of the mix, the field is wide open. Federer and Nadal should be the players to beat, but a healthy Cilic can certainly make a run. The 28-year-old Croatian is 29-14 in singles matches on the year. He also has one ATP singles title after winning in Istanbul. Stay tuned to see if the world No. 6 is able to recover in time for the US Open.
