Daria Gavrilova tastes victory on the WTA Tour for the first time in her career. The Australian tennis player wins the 2017 Connecticut Open singles title.

Daria Gavrilova has remained steadfast in her effort to earn a singles title on the WTA Tour. Now, the wait is over for the 23-year-old tennis player.

Upsetting second seed Dominika Cibulková in the finals, Gavrilova wins the 2017 Connecticut Open singles title.

Going into the finals, the unseeded Australian tennis player had some unexpected momentum. In her semifinals match, she defeated top seed and defending champion Agnieszka Radwańska in straight sets. She took the match 6-4, 6-4.

After dropping the first finals set to Dominika Cibulková, Daria Gavrilova cruised to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Prior to her first ever WTA Tour singles title, she did have four ITF singles titles to her name to go along with a WTA doubles title. It was just a matter of time before the young up and coming Gavrilova would make her splash in singles on the WTA Tour.

Currently, Daria Gavrilova is the world No. 20 in women’s singles tennis. In terms of points, she is right in the mix with several other players close to her in the rankings. Up next for the rising tennis star is the US Open.

On Tuesday, Gavrilova faces Allie Kiick of the United States. At the US Open this year, the world No. 20 sees herself seeded No. 25 going into her round of 128 meeting with Kiick. In the last two years, Gavrilova has only reached the first round of play at the US Open, but the win at the Connecticut Open could play a role in her appearance this week.
