Eugenie Bouchard saw nonstop unforced errors pile up throughout her two-set loss to Evgeniya Rodina. The Canadian is out of the US Open.

Eugenie Bouchard kicked off her US Open campaign at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Her opponent, Evgeniya Rodina, was looking to make it three consecutive years of reaching the second round at Flushing Meadows.

From the start of the match, the sun cast a distinct shadow splitting the court in two. Both players traded points throughout the first set without either taking full advantage of any momentum. Rodina emerged on top, winning 7-6 (7-2).

The young Canadian has reached the fourth round of the US Open twice throughout her young career. At just 23-years-old, Bouchard has already made it as high as world No. 5 in the women’s singles rankings. She has been fighting for the past two years to reassemble her game and reach the top of the sport yet again.

Evgeniya Rodina defeats Eugenie Bouchard 7-6, 6-1.

The Russian tennis veteran played a solid overall match, allowing Bouchard to make the mistakes. 46 unforced errors on the Canadian’s part interrupted any momentum she attempted to gather. This is compared to just 18 unforced errors on Rodina’s part.

Up next for the Russian is Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian tennis star is the fourth seed this year at the US Open. She is the current world No. 4 in women’s singles on the WTA Tour.

Eugenie Bouchard mounted a comeback in the first set, but ultimately could not keep up with Rodina’s strong play. The Russian appeared confident in her ability to move Bouchard across the baseline. Keeping her composure throughout the first round match, she advances into the second round of play for the third straight year.

On Tuesday at the US Open, defending champion Angelique Kerber fell to Naomi Osaka of Japan. The stunning upset by Osaka came in just two sets over the sixth seeded German tennis star. Kerber has struggled to assert herself so far on the 2017 WTA Tour.

Another major loss came to second seed Simona Halep. The Romanian faced a difficult draw against former champion Maria Sharapova. The Russian has been making her comeback to the sport this year after serving a fifteen month ban for the use of meldonium. Sharapova took the opening round match in a hard-fought three-set victory.
