On Monday at Flushing Meadows, del Potro defeated sixth seed Dominic Thiem 1-6, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

The round of 16 meeting was going Thiem’s way for the first half of the match. Cruising through the first two sets over del Potro, the sixth seed appeared in control. Showing his experience and grit however, the Argentinian began to comeback, hitting aces and rallying behind the cheering crowds in the third set.

The current world No. 28 in men’s singles will now face Federer in the quarterfinals at the US Open.

While Thiem was a young favorite for the title this year, del Potro is a former champion and has the tour experience to make a final push toward glory.

Juan Martin del Potro is 5-16 throughout his career against Roger Federer.

Going into Monday’s match against Thiem, del Potro had not dropped a single set at the US Open this year. He even scored a strong win over eleventh seed Roberto Bautista Agut, winning 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 32.

Look for Juan Martin del Potro to give Federer a tough quarterfinals match. He has the power and experience against the Swiss superstar to push him to his limits. Federer, the third seed this year, defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber in his round of 16 match against the German tennis player. He won 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.
