Pablo Carreño Busta has experienced a breakout season in 2017. He continued that success with a trip to the semifinals at the US Open.

Of all the wonderful stories to be found on the ATP World Tour, few have been more consistently overlooked than that of the rise of Pablo Carreño Busta. Carreño Busta was ranked No. 56 as recently as July of 2016, but has steadily climbed the rankings to the Top 20 in the world.

At the 2017 US Open, Carreño Busta has added new elements of suspense and genuine brilliance to his unforgettable ascension.

Carreño Busta entered the 2017 US Open with the No. 19 ranking on the ATP World Tour. He’s far exceeded expectations, mastering his quarter of the draw and advancing to the quarterfinals with a combination of poise and precision.

Playing in the biggest match of his career thus far, Carreño Busta continued his ascension with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Diego Schwartzman.

By defeating Schwartzman, Carreño Busta has reached a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time in his promising and growing career.

Simply making a Grand Slam semifinal would be reason enough to believe that this is a breakout season. It’s his second deep run at a Grand Slam event in 2017, however, as he also reached the quarterfinal of the French Open.

Coupled with his run to the semifinals at Indian Wells, Carreño Busta has put forth a season that should propel him into the Top 15 in the world.

That result is all but guaranteed following his performance at the US Open, which isn’t yet over, and could ultimately culminate in an even greater result.

Carreño Busta has admittedly played a more manageable draw than some might have expected him to. Players are forced to defeat the players put in front of them, however, and that makes his success commendable.

Carreño Busta will now move on to face the winner of the match between Kevin Anderson and Sam Querrey in the semifinals of the 2017 US Open.
